Sensory 4

Skills

  • Climbing the rock wall or crossing the monkey bars gives children sensory input of movement and body position.
  • Children receive vestibular input from the swings and slide.
  • Balance, balance reaction and core strength are worked on when children sit and slide down the slide or swing on the swings.

Play Ideas

  • Use highly tactile or audible items to slide down the slide such as a ball with an internal chime.

Adaptation Ideas

  • Use verbal cues such as, “In,” and “Out” or “Forward,” and “Backward” to help children remember how to move their legs to pump and swing.

Physical 3

Skills

  • The rock wall enables children to challenge their physical strength and whole body coordination.
  • Children receive vestibular input from the swings and slide.
  • Motor planning and coordination skills are used to climb and play on this set.

Play Ideas

  • Have two children at opposite ends of the slide roll a ball back and forth to one another. If one of the children is in a wheelchair, find the most comfortable position next to the slide to catch the ball.
  • Have children swing on the Glider swing. It seats two children so they can assist each other with the movement and strength necessary to swing.
  • Have the child slide down the slide lying on his stomach (feet first). This gives children more support and requires less core strength. Note: the swings have a maximum weight of 115lbs. Heavy duty swings are available and sold separately that hold a maximum weight of 350lbs.

Adaptation Ideas

  • Change the sling seat swing to another design (Alternative swings sold separately).
  • Use verbal cues such as, “In,” and “Out” or “Forward,” and “Backward” to help children remember how to move their legs to pump and swing.
